Earthquake Safety - Let's start by looking at the earth, how it was formed, and the changes that it is still going through. The earth was formed as a molten ball, gradually it cooled, a crust was formed. We live on it, our oceans and mountains exist on it. The crust is broken into huge plates, which shift and move over a hot elastic mantle surrounding the earth's core. The process is very slow, raising mountains and deepening valleys over millions of years. These continental plates, as they are called, interact in many ways. In California, the North American and Pacific plates are sliding passed one another, along the San Andreas Fault. Sometimes they stick, build up tremendous strain, break, and shift suddenly. That results in what we call an earthquake. Topics included in this safety video are: if you are inside when the shaking starts, if you are outside when the shaking begins, driving your car on the freeway, watching a sporting event at your favorite stadium, attending religious services, taking a bath at home, if you’re in the kitchen when the shaking starts, if you're eating lunch in the company cafeteria, and riding in an elevator.
