Hazardous materials and waste are part of many work situations, and can be found on many types of job sites. OSHA feels that it is so important for employees to know how to recognize these potentially dangerous substances (as well as how to handle and dispose of them properly) they have mandated that anyone working with these substances receive comprehensive training in this area. In 1976, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to regulate the handling of hazardous waste "from cradle to grave". Since then other regulations have followed, including OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.120, also known as HAZWOPER. As part of these regulations, there are varying requirements for employee training, depending on an employee's specific level of involvement with hazardous materials. Areas covered in the program include chemical hazard concepts, types of hazardous chemicals, characteristics and effects of various types of chemicals, the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), container labeling, safe handling practices, use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), spills and cleanup, and more. The Videotape Program comes with a comprehensive Leader's Guide, reproducible Scheduling & Attendance Form, Employee Quiz, Training Log and Training Certificate. The Program can be used as the basis for approximately two hours of classroom training.
Understanding Chemical Hazards Video and DVD Excerpt: Facing situations like these is a part of your
job. Whether you work around hazardous substances or in emergency response there
are times when you can encounter danger at every turn. Poisonous gasses, pools
of acid, chemical fires, confined spaces, heat stress even toxic spills. When
you go to work you need a unique set of tools to make it through the day
safely, from monitoring devices to personal protective equipment. It's also
important to use specialized work procedures for every job that you do. Taking
a gas sample, plugging a leaking drum, cleaning up a spill, there's a right way
to do it and a wrong one. But the most important thing that you use on the job
is between your ears, your brain. However, it can only help you if it's filled
with information. By learning everything there is to know about the chemicals
you work with, you can be sure you understand the hazards they present. And
sometimes that knowledge is your last line of defense. There is no doubt that
your job can be rough, so it's a good thing that you have a strong regulation
on your side. OSHA's hazardous waste operations and emergency response standard,
also known as HAZWOPER.
