Description: MARCOM's "Introduction to HAZWOPER Retraining" HAZWOPER Videotape Program assists facilities in complying with the employee training requirements of OSHA's HAZWOPER regulation (29 CFR 1910.120), and reminds employees who deal with hazardous materials of the importance of identifying, evaluating and controlling chemical hazards. Hazardous materials and waste are part of many work situations, and can be found on many types of job sites. OSHA feels that it is so important for employees to know how to recognize these potentially dangerous substances (as well as how to handle and dispose of them properly) they have mandated that anyone working with these substances receive comprehensive training in this area. In 1976, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to regulate the handling of hazardous waste "from cradle to grave". Since then other regulations have followed, including OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.120, also known as HAZWOPER. As part of these regulations, there are varying requirements for employee training, depending on an employee's specific level of involvement with hazardous materials.

Areas covered in the program include background of the HAZWOPER regulations, the site safety and health plan, the emergency response plan, site characterization and the site control program, systems of controls, standard operating procedures, personal protective equipment, exposure monitoring, decontamination and medical surveillance programs, and more. The Videotape Program comes with a comprehensive Leader's Guide, reproducible Scheduling & Attendance Form, Employee Quiz, Training Log and Training Certificate. The Program can be used as the basis for approximately two hours of classroom training.

Introduction to HAZWOPER Retraining Video and DVD Excerpt: What is hazardous waste? Some people see it as "spent chemicals". Others think of as an industrial bi product. But most of us do recognize that it is something that can cause us harm. To truly understand what hazardous means, we need to look at regulations that have been set up by several government agencies. In the hazard communication standard OSHA defines a hazardous chemical as any chemical that has a physical hazard or a health hazard. Physical hazards include combustible liquids, compressed gasses, flammables, explosives, oxidizers, organic peroxides and reactive chemicals. Health hazards include; sensitizers, irritants, corrosives, toxic agents and carcinogens. The US department of transportation defines a hazardous material as; a substance that can pose and unreasonable risk to health, safety, or property when transported. This includes any material listed in the appendix of the DOT hazardous material table. The EPA defines hazardous waste as; any discarded material which is regulated because it exhibits the characteristic of ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity. As you can see these definitions vary. When we look at all of them together however a common picture emerges. The US department of transportation, OSHA, and EPA agree that hazardous waste can injure, sicken, or kill.
