Description: MARCOM's "HAZMAT Labeling" HAZWOPER Videotape Program assists facilities in complying with the employee training requirements of OSHA's HAZWOPER regulation (29 CFR 1910.120), and instructs employees who deal with hazardous materials that they can reduce the risk of accidental exposure by using the correct labels and placards on each chemical container. Hazardous materials and waste are part of many work situations, and can be found on many types of job sites. OSHA feels that it is so important for employees to know how to recognize these potentially dangerous substances (as well as how to handle and dispose of them properly) they have mandated that anyone working with these materials receive comprehensive training in this area. In 1976, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to regulate the handling of hazardous waste "from cradle to grave". Since then other regulations have followed, including OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.120, also known as HAZWOPER. As part of these regulations, there are varying requirements for employee training, depending on an employee's specific level of involvement with hazardous materials.

Areas covered in the program include where hazardous material labels are used, OSHA labeling requirements, most common labeling systems, DOT Hazard Class labels and placards, the Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS), target organ information labels, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Labeling System, hazardous waste labels, and more. The Videotape Program comes with a comprehensive Leader's Guide, reproducible Scheduling & Attendance Form, Employee Quiz, Training Log and Training Certificate. The program can be used as the basis for approximately two hours of classroom training.

HAZMAT Labeling Video and DVD Excerpt: Throughout the day we encounter a variety of chemicals. But in order to work with them safely we need to be able to identify them, that's where labels come in. Labels tell us the name of a substance, who made it and warn us about it's hazards. Some labels even tell us how to protect ourselves. To ensure that we have this critical information, OSHA's hazards communication standard mandates that chemical manufacturers, importers and distributors label containers of hazardous substances. These include; drums, barrels, boxes, bottles, cylinders, storage containers, process vats, tanks and even trucks and rail cars. OSHA's requirements are fairly flexible. The labels must be legible, prominently displayed and include 3 types of information. First, the identity of the substance must be marked on the label. Usually a chemical is identified by a proper name such as ammonia. But a substance may also be referred to as a common name such as bleach. In addition to the chemical's name appropriate hazard warnings must be clearly displayed on the label. These warnings can be in the form of words or symbols. They should plainly show that the contents of the container are hazardous. The final pieces of information that must appear on a container are the name and address of the chemical's manufacturer and distributor or importer. This allows you to contact the material's originator if you need more information.
