Hazardous materials and waste are part of many work situations, and can be found on many types of job sites. OSHA feels that it is so important for employees to know how to recognize these potentially dangerous substances (as well as how to handle and dispose of them properly) they have mandated that anyone working with these substances receive comprehensive training in this area. In 1976, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to regulate the handling of hazardous waste "from cradle to grave". Since then other regulations have followed, including OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.120, also known as HAZWOPER. As part of these regulations, there are varying requirements for employee training, depending on an employee's specific level of involvement with hazardous materials. Areas covered in the Program include the importance of the MSDS, the MSDS's role in the Hazard Communication Standard, advantages of the ANSI Format, the four basic questions that the ANSI MSDS answers, a review of the sections in the ANSI Material Safety Data Sheet, and more. The Videotape Program comes with a comprehensive Leader's Guide, reproducible Scheduling & Attendance Form, Employee Quiz, Training Log and Training Certificate. The Program can be used as the basis for approximately two hours of classroom training.
ANSI Material Safety Data Sheet Video and DVD Excerpt: Most of us encounter chemicals in the workplace
everyday. They are used in a wide range of industrial possessing, and are often
essential in our jobs. However, if we don't take the proper precautions many of
these materials can be hazardous to our health and safety. There are many types
of potentially hazardous chemicals, flammables, corrosives, irritants,
sensitizers, poisons and even carcinogens that can cause cancer. Each
individual chemical product has it's own set of hazards, required safety
precautions and recommended emergency procedures. So how can we work with
hazardous chemicals safely? How should they be handled when we store them? What
personal protective equipment should we use? What should we do in an emergency?
Fortunately the answers to these important questions can be found on a hazardous
chemical's MSDS (It's material safety data sheet). The MSDS is a valuable tool
to identifying and dealing with the hazards presented by chemicals. But like
any other tool we need to understand it's purpose, and know how to use it properly.
In 1983 OSHA instituted the hazard communication standard. Its purpose is to ensure
that workers have access to the information and equipment they need to work
safely with hazardous chemicals. This right to know regulation requires
chemical manufacturers and importers to give their customers the material
safety data sheets for any potentially hazardous products they supply. In turn
employers are required to give their employees access to MSDS's for the
hazardous materials present in their workplace.
